Travel Alert: Magnitude 8.8 earthquake strikes offshore near Maule, Chile, on Feb. 27, causing damage and power outages. Tsunami warning issued for Chile and Peru.

Please be advised that a magnitude 8.8 earthquake struck offshore near Maule, Chile, at 03:34am on Feb. 27. The epicenter of the strong quake was 115 km (71 miles) north-northeast of Concepcion and 325 km (200 miles) southwest of Santiago. The US Pacific Tsunami Warning Center has issued a tsunami warning for Chile and Peru, and has urged residents to evacuate coastal areas. A tsunami watch is also in effect for Ecuador, Colombia, Antarctica, Panama and Costa Rica. Chilean authorities have reported at least 10 deaths and numerous injuries. Major structural damage and power outages have occurred in Santiago, Concepcion and other parts of Chile. Several aftershocks have occurred and more are likely in the coming days.
